What it is
When periodontitis destroys the bone that supports a tooth, periodontal bone regeneration uses grafts and, in many cases, a biocompatible membrane to guide the growth of new bone in the affected area, within our periodontics area.
How it differs from regeneration before an implant
Although the technique is similar to the one we use before placing a dental implant in oral surgery, the goal here is different: saving a natural tooth you already have, not preparing an area for a future implant.
A prior requirement
Regenerating bone only makes sense once the periodontal infection is under control. That’s why we always start by treating the periodontitis before considering regeneration.

What the process looks like
- Infection control Before regenerating, we clear the active infection with scaling and deep disinfection.
- Graft and membrane We place bone graft material and, if appropriate, a membrane that guides the regeneration of the lost bone.
- Periodontal maintenance Regular check-ups to monitor progress and prevent the gum disease from progressing again.
Frequently asked questions
Does all the lost bone grow back?
Not always in full, but in many cases a significant part of the bone support is recovered, enough to stabilise the tooth and stop it being loose.
How is it different from bone regeneration for implants?
The goal is different: here it's about saving a natural tooth affected by periodontitis, whereas regeneration before an implant prepares a toothless area so an implant can be placed.
Is special maintenance needed afterwards?
Yes. Regular periodontal maintenance is essential for the regenerated bone to stay stable in the long term.
