Pterygoid Implants

An advanced implant technique that anchors the implant in the pterygoid bone, at the back of the palate, for patients with little jawbone, without needing a graft.

What it is

The pterygoid implant is anchored in the pterygoid bone, a dense, stable area at the back of the palate that’s rarely used in conventional implantology. It’s an alternative to a sinus lift or bone graft when there isn’t enough bone at the back of the upper jaw.

When it’s used

It’s mainly considered for patients with advanced bone loss in the upper jaw who want a fixed-teeth solution without undergoing prior bone regeneration surgery within oral surgery. It’s often combined with conventional implants at the front to support a full-arch prosthesis.

When it's indicated
  • Significant bone loss at the back of the upper jaw
  • The patient wants to avoid a sinus lift or a bone graft
  • Need for stable posterior support for a full-arch prosthesis

What the process looks like

  1. 3D study
3D X-ray to precisely locate the pterygoid bone and plan the exact angle for inserting the implant.
  2. Surgical placement
The implant is anchored in a dense, stable area of bone at the back of the palate, avoiding the need for a graft.
  3. Loading the prosthesis
The pterygoid implant provides posterior support for the prosthesis, combined with conventional implants at the front.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a riskier technique than a conventional implant?

It requires more experience and very precise 3D planning because of the proximity to anatomical structures, but when well planned it's a safe technique with very good long-term results.

Does it always replace a sinus lift?

In many cases yes, avoiding an additional surgery and shortening the overall treatment time, although not every case is suitable: this is assessed with the prior 3D study.

Does it hurt more than a normal implant?

Recovery is similar to any implant surgery, with local anaesthesia during the procedure and mild discomfort in the following days.
